† Jareth †

My pulse was drumming in my ears, drowning out the words of encouragement spoken by Skoll and Nolan as I fumbled to light a cigarette.

Fucking Oscar.

Let’s kill the rat bastard.

I hated him.

Cadejo lands were some of the richest in the region and it was because of his export of bio-diesel which he kept the other packs dependent on. For years I’d tried to get the other Alphas to use more sustainable resources, even offering to produce custom equipment myself, but they didn’t want to be in debt to me for the short run. They’d rather line that asshole’s pockets instead. They were all cowards, scared of change, and he played them like the fools they were.

As if I didn’t have reason enough to hate him already, watching Kera rush to protect him…

Watching him inhale her scent…

My hands shook as the match caught.

I’d never known this kind of anger before. My beast was snarling, begging to be set free to hunt the dickhead down. I had to get out of here before I did something that would change the future of all our packs, because I was going to rip his throat out and bathe in his blood and claim the Cadejo territory as my own.

Which was terrifying.

I shouldn’t be thinking like this.

My sister was a captive, young pups had been taken from my lands, and I was wasting time with this bullshit meeting.

Kill the Alpha... Kill the purists… My wolf continued to pace and chant.

My eyes shot up as Skoll took his meaty hand off my shoulder. Kera walked out of the gaudy Alpha home and stood on the porch staring at me while she communicated with her Beta.

The look on her face drove a splintered stake through my heart. This morning, I’d seen the flicker of hope. Now the light was dimmed in her eyes, replaced by a disappointed acceptance.

Welcome to the club, princess. I inhaled a deep drag off the cigarette before crushing it under my boot.
